Starting in 2016, the Trinity Alps Chamber Music Festival began presenting a "Midwinter Classics" series.
Each year musicians would gather for a 10-14 day retreat and tour that would offer the time to rehearse and prepare an in-depth examination of one of Ludwig van Beethoven's famous late string quartets.
In 2016, we presented Beethoven's String Quartet in E-flat Major, Op. 127.
Accompanying this work, as an introduction to Beethoven's late style, was his Violin Sonata in G Major, Op. 96.
In 2017, we presented Beethoven's String Quartet in A Minor, Op. 132
Accompanying this work was Beethoven's Piano Sonata in E Major, Op. 109.
In 2018, we presented Beethoven's String Quartet in B-flat Major, Op. 130
Accompanying this work, and giving a contrast to Beethoven's earlier style, was his Piano Trio in B-flat, Op. 11.
In 2019, we presented Beethoven's String Quartet in C-sharp Minor, Op. 131
Accompanying this work was Beethoven's magnificent Piano Sonata in A-flat Major, Op. 110. (Such great fugues!)
In 2020, we presented Beethoven's String Quartet in F Major, Op. 135.
Accompanying this work was Beethoven's "first and last" music for the piano, his Piano Sonata in F Minor, Op. 2, No. 1, and the Six Bagatelles, Op. 126.
(You can read a recap of this tour here.)
In 2023, after a pandemic related hiatus, this series returned with Schubert's String Quartet in A Minor, the "Rosamunde"
Accompanying this work was Beethoven's early Piano Sonata, Op. 28, the "Pastorale", and Chopin's famous "Raindrop" Prelude, as an homage to the relentless wet weather that hit California that winter.
2024 and beyond will likely continue the exploration of Schubert's late String Quartets, although we remain flexible in our planning efforts!
